Perfect Conditions Don’t Make Perfect Fighters
Perfect conditions have never produced peak performance in any of my fighters. The fighters who wanted or needed perfect conditions didn’t win often and didn’t last long.
But I have been lucky enough to see the absolute best in a fighter. I’ve witnessed full potential materialize and human action look more like divine impetus. But this only happened when conditions were far from perfect. In fact, the most inspiring performances come from what most people would have called Impossible circumstances. It may seem counter intuitive, but I’ve come to believe that the math here is fairly simple:
-Leaping over shorter hurdles will not make you jump higher.
-Racing slower competitors will not make you run faster.
-Fighting weaker kickboxers will not make you a stronger champion.
-An uneventful, mellow day at work does not make you more patient or better prepared for calamity.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with looking for things to go well for you, but life won’t (and shouldn’t) always give you that. And that’s where I think things get interesting. When you think the glass is half empty it is in fact OVERFLOWING with the gift of a life changing opportunity.
What most people resent and avoid is really where the gold is. What we thought were demons are really our angels trying to lift us up. Your worst challenges and your scariest opponents are simply the stage for the best performances of your life.
